The method and instrument of transporting things differs from place to place, from race to race, for the landscape people live on and the things they move are different. During a trip to Nepal, I saw people carry heavy stuff, wrapped up and tied with along strong around the forehead and support of one's butt, and I thought it was a good way of transporting things at the high mountains and deep valleys.

Even in a small Korean peninsula, whereas the Gureok was a major water transport instrument in Jeju island, women used to carry pots of water on their heads in the inland. Anyway, if you asked the Korean people to select the most popular transport instrument on the Korean peninsula, they would certainly point their finger to A-Frame. In the book written by Park Je-ga titled "Bukhak-eui," there is a passage in which the writer was surprised to see a wagon, but in a land where more than 65 percent is mountainous, I guess that A-Frame is certainly more practical method of transport.

It is more than apparent, however, that in the Korean peninsula, the A-Frame is an idiomorphic means of transport invented and developed by the Korean people. It becomes apparent that this A-Frame had been used from the early days of our nation in consideration of the fact that an antique icon of an A-Frame carrier was excavated from an old tomb of the Silla period. It made an appearance in a linguistic book "Yeok-eo Ryuhai," or an interpretation of a similar words in translation, published in the 16th year of King Sukjong.

A Swedish journalist who came to visit Korea toward the end of the Chosun dynasty, wrote that a man of standard build could carry up to 189kg of load for a short distance without much difficulty. With this A-Frame on the back, one, standing on balance, can carry a load as heavy as 2 to 3 times as heavy as one's own weight.

When you get tired on the way, you can stop and have the A-Frame buttressed with a stick, and take rest. People relay on this A-Frame for the transport of all harvested farm products and to transport the woods cut or collected in the mountain. During the Korean War, this transport means played a role for the transport of military supplies in the mountainous areas. There was even a unit, called the A-Frame. The American soldiers called this convenient carrier an A-Frame, for it looks like A in the alphabet. A-Frame used to play a vital role in the partisan activities in the Jiri Mountains.

Nothing was no useful as the A-Frame as a means of transporting supplies across the valleys and over the mountain ridges. A French folklorist Charles Baradeau said the A-Frame is the creative and scientific transport instrument with the use of both shoulders and the back power combined.

The A-Frame is pointed out as one of the most outstanding farm instruments, together with the two-man stepping mills and the stepping water taxi.

Depending on the materials from which the A-Frame is made, some is called the Pine Tree A-Frame, Oak Tree A-Frame, and depending on the usage and look, some are called the Chok A-Frame, some Manure A-Frame, some Water A-Frame, and so forth. And until recently some modernized A-Frames were used to move up the cement and other construction materials in the building sites. Jige could be pointed out as one of the most Korean-esque things.
